Preconvention: Supercharging Skills-Based Health Education: Bringing Missouri’s New Health Standards to Life with HealthSmart

Missouri’s newly adopted health education standards create an exciting opportunity to move beyond simply teaching health content and toward developing the skills students need to make healthy decisions throughout their lives. In this interactive workshop, participants will explore practical, evidence-based strategies for implementing skills-based health education aligned to Missouri’s updated standards.

Educators will experience proven HealthSmart instructional practices that strengthen student engagement while building essential health skills, including decision-making, goal-setting, analyzing influences, accessing valid information, interpersonal communication, self-management, and advocacy. Through model lessons, classroom-ready activities, and collaborative planning opportunities, participants will learn how to transform standards into meaningful learning experiences that promote health literacy and positive behavior outcomes.

Attendees will leave with free skills-based health education resources, implementation tools, and access to national best practices that support high-quality health instruction. In addition, participants will receive complimentary review access to the HealthSmart, providing an opportunity to explore a comprehensive, standards-aligned curriculum designed to support effective health education in Missouri schools.

Presenter bio:

Jamie Sparks serves as Agile Product Manager for HealthSmart at ETR and is Executive Director of Kentucky SHAPE. A former Coordinated School Health Director for the Kentucky Department of Education and Past President of SHAPE America, Jamie has spent more than two decades supporting schools, districts, and state agencies in advancing health and physical education. His work focuses on skills-based health education, standards implementation, curriculum design, and professional learning that empowers educators to improve student health literacy and lifelong wellness outcomes.

Objectives
• Participants will be able to discuss how a concussion affects learning and activity participation for youth.
• Participants will gain knowledge about Get Schooled on Concussions as an evidence-based tool to
support any concussed student in return to learn and activities, while saving time for yourself, classroom
teachers, school nurses, administrators, and other school personnel.
• Participants will be able to identify benefits and user-friendly ease of the Teacher Acute Concussion Tool
(TACT) through a step-by-step “practice” of the TACT.
Program Narrative
Many concussed students return to PE class with symptoms that can be supported through academic and
participation suggestions that do not require an IEP or 504. By supporting concussed students in PE class, they
can be in school to learn, enjoy friendships, and manage schoolwork expectations. Get Schooled on Concussions
Teacher Acute Concussion Tool (TACT) provides evidence and clinically-based suggestions that can immediately
be implemented to support any concussed student in return to learn. This FREE, easy-to-use, and practical tool
saves you time. It is free to every school in Missouri. Attend this session to learn how to use the TACT. You will
also learn how to access one-on-one technical assistance to implement the TACT within your District or school
with the help of a Get Schooled on Concussions for Missouri Task Force member.

Presenter Bio
Maureen Cunningham has led the Brain Injury Association of Missouri (BIA-MO) since 2008, with a focus on
youth concussions since 2011. Concussion education and support for schools includes the Concussions: Facts,
Fallacies, and New Frontiers Seminars, Get Schooled on Concussions for Missouri partnership, and Save Your
Brain school-based presentations.
